There are many cycle routes centred on, or which pass through, Okehampton.
This is the premier cycle route in the county and is 102 miles in total. It runs from Ilfracombe on the North Devon Coast to the English Channel at Plymouth, with Okehampton at its centre. You can follow the route to the north of the town which offers wonderful rural countryside beside river and farmland on quiet lanes through Abbeyford woods towards Jacobstowe and Hatherleigh. The view from the Balaclava monument at Haterleigh is worth the ride in itself. To the south and west the route offers impressive views over the swathes of Dartmoor as it heads towards Lydford. Here also is the brand new off-road section from Meldon to Sourton that includes the stunning Meldon viaduct.
If you are travelling north, then there is an alternative easier route from Okehampton Train Station to Northlake. (See 'How to find us' section for details.)
This is a 30 mile circular on-road route that you can start and finish in Okehampton. There are options for shortcuts and links to the Devon Coast to Coast route. The route takes you through quiet settlements in picturesque countryside with some excellent places to stop and snack or admire the historical wealth of the area such as the 12th century church at Honeychurch.
This offers two circular routes (of 11 or 26 miles) which you can pick up in Lydford and takes you through the wide landscapes of the rural West Devon countryside with fine views of Dartmoor. You may want to pause as you ride past to take the short walk up to the wonderful Brentor Church perched on a tor and then continue, dropping down to the attractive market town of Tavistock. This route also links to the Devon Coast to Coast route.
This 90 mile circular on-road cycling route runs around Dartmoor National Park, connecting the historic and varied towns and villages of Okehampton, Moretonhampstead, Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and Princetown. It also passes through many other settlements and many different types of scenery along the way from the wooded Dart Valley to the open moorland landscape around Princetown. The Dartmoor Way joins up with the Devon Coast to Coast route on the western side of Dartmoor.
This is a 21 mile circular on-road route in a very rural part of Devon running from Bridgestone out to Roadford Reservoir and back. It crosses the rivers Lew, Thrushel and Lyd along the way and passed through the villages of Broadwoodwidger and Lewtrenchard. There are opportunities for shortcuts for the less enthusiastic. It joins the Devon Coast to Coast at Bridestowe.
In the summer season the B1 Bike Bus services leaves Okehampton each morning from Tuesday to Sunday. So a one way cycle is possible to suit your time available and cycling prowess.
Bikes can be hired locally from Okehampton Youth Hostel.
